Alumiiniumalkoksüüle, also known as aluminum alkoxides, are a group of chemical compounds with the general formula Al(OR)3, where R represents an alkyl group. These compounds are derived from aluminum metal and alcohols. They are typically white, crystalline solids, though some can be amorphous or waxy. Aluminum alkoxides are highly reactive and are sensitive to moisture, readily hydrolyzing in the presence of water to form aluminum hydroxide and the corresponding alcohol. This reactivity makes them useful as intermediates in various chemical syntheses but also requires careful handling and storage under anhydrous conditions.

The preparation of aluminum alkoxides usually involves the reaction of aluminum metal with an alcohol, often in the presence of a catalyst or a small amount of mercury to activate the aluminum surface. Alternatively, they can be synthesized by reacting aluminum halides with alkali metal alkoxides. The simplest and most common example is aluminum isopropoxide, Al(OCH(CH3)2)3, which is widely used in organic chemistry. Other common examples include aluminum ethoxide and aluminum tert-butoxide.

Aluminum alkoxides find significant applications as catalysts and reagents in organic synthesis. They are particularly valuable in condensation reactions, such as the Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction and the Oppenauer oxidation, which are used for the selective reduction or oxidation of alcohols. They can also act as Lewis acids, promoting various addition and rearrangement reactions. Furthermore, aluminum alkoxides serve as precursors for the synthesis of other aluminum-containing materials, including ceramics, catalysts, and coatings, often through sol-gel processes. Their ability to form stable gels upon hydrolysis is exploited in the production of alumina-based materials.
