Altarraum
Altarraum refers to the specific area within a Christian church that houses the altar. This space is considered the most sacred part of the church building. Traditionally, it is situated at the eastern end of the nave and is often elevated or separated by a chancel screen or choir. The Altarraum is where the principal liturgical actions, most notably the Eucharist, take place. Its design and furnishings, such as the altar itself, the tabernacle, and the seating for clergy, are all oriented towards facilitating these sacred rites. The term can also encompass the sanctuary and presbytery in some contexts. In many denominations, the Altarraum is a focal point for congregational worship and a visual representation of the divine presence. Its architecture and decoration often reflect the theological significance attributed to this holy space.
