Alfabetit

Alfabetit is the definite form of alfabeti in Albanian, meaning the alphabet. In everyday language it refers to the Albanian alphabet, the set of letters used to write the Albanian language.

The Albanian alphabet is Latin-based and is the official script of Albanian writing in Albania, Kosovo, and most communities where Albanian is spoken. It comprises 29 letters and includes several digraphs that are treated as single letters in orthography, such as dh, gj, ll, nj, rr, sh, and th. The letters ç and ë are distinct characters used to represent specific sounds in Albanian.

Historically, Albanian was written with different scripts before unification. A standardized Latin-based alphabet was adopted at the Congress of Monastir in 1908–1909 to promote literacy and national cohesion. Since then, the orthography has been refined by linguistic bodies and remains the basis for teaching, publishing, and official communication.

The alphabet is used for both major Albanian dialects, Gheg and Tosk, and is the standard form used in education and media in Albania and Kosovo, as well as in Albanian communities abroad.
