Akyem
Akyem refers to a subgroup of the Akan, an ethnic group in southern Ghana. They are traditionally divided into two main royal areas, Akyem Abuakwa and Akyem Kotoku, whose traditional homeland lies in the Okyeman area along the Birim River valley in the Eastern Region. The Abuakwa center around Kyebi, while Kotoku encompasses other communities in the same region. The Akyem speak a Twi dialect known as Akyem Twi and share Akan cultural practices, including a chieftaincy system that blends matrilineal and other lineage-based elements.
