Aktiivilaitteita, meaning active devices in Finnish, refers to electronic components that are capable of modifying a signal through amplification or switching. Unlike passive components, which only dissipate or store energy, active devices require an external power source to operate. This power source enables them to control the flow of electrical energy, thus altering the characteristics of the signal passing through them.

Common examples of active devices include transistors, diodes, operational amplifiers (op-amps), and vacuum tubes. Transistors, in their various forms like bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) and field-effect transistors (FETs), are fundamental building blocks in modern electronics. They can act as amplifiers, increasing the strength of a signal, or as switches, turning a signal on or off. Diodes, while sometimes considered a borderline case due to their simpler function, are also active in the sense that they control current direction and require a voltage to conduct.

Operational amplifiers are integrated circuits that are widely used for signal conditioning, filtering, and control systems. They are capable of performing a wide range of mathematical operations on analog signals. Vacuum tubes, though largely superseded by solid-state devices, were the primary active components in early electronic systems and still find niche applications today. The ability of active devices to amplify and switch signals is what makes complex electronic circuits and systems possible, from radios and televisions to computers and smartphones.
