Aivoselkävesi

Aivoselkävesi, also known as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), is a clear, colorless fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. It acts as a cushion, protecting the central nervous system from physical shock and injury. CSF is produced primarily in the choroid plexuses within the ventricles of the brain. It circulates through the ventricular system, the subarachnoid space, and eventually drains into the venous system.

The composition of CSF is crucial for maintaining the optimal environment for neuronal function. It contains electrolytes, glucose, amino acids, and a small number of white blood cells. CSF plays a vital role in waste removal, transporting metabolic byproducts from the brain tissue. It also helps to regulate intracranial pressure and provides buoyancy to the brain, reducing its effective weight.

Analysis of CSF, obtained through a lumbar puncture (spinal tap), can provide valuable diagnostic information. Abnormalities in its composition, such as the presence of blood, increased protein levels, or elevated white blood cell counts, can indicate various neurological conditions, including infections (like meningitis), inflammation, bleeding, or tumors. Monitoring CSF flow and pressure is also important in conditions like hydrocephalus.
