Ainaro

Ainaro is a municipality and a town located in the Ainaro District of East Timor. It is situated in the central highlands of the island, approximately 70 kilometers south of the capital city, Dili. The region is known for its mountainous terrain, fertile valleys, and agricultural activities. Ainaro serves as the administrative center for the Ainaro District, which encompasses several subdistricts.

Historically, Ainaro played a significant role during the Portuguese colonial era and later during the Indonesian occupation. The town itself experienced considerable hardship and destruction during the transition to independence in 1999. Following the referendum and subsequent violence, Ainaro was rebuilt with the assistance of international aid.

The economy of Ainaro is primarily based on agriculture. Coffee is a major cash crop cultivated in the surrounding hills, and it is a significant source of income for many residents. Other agricultural products include maize, vegetables, and fruits. The district also has some livestock farming. The natural beauty of the mountainous landscape offers potential for ecotourism, though this sector is still developing.
