Adsorption systems utilize solid materials called adsorbents to remove specific substances from a fluid stream, either a liquid or a gas. The process involves the attraction of molecules from the fluid phase onto the surface of the solid adsorbent. This phenomenon is driven by intermolecular forces, such as van der Waals forces or chemical bonding. Adsorption systems are widely employed in various industrial and environmental applications due to their effectiveness in purification, separation, and recovery processes.

The design of an adsorption system typically includes a vessel containing the adsorbent material, a mechanism for introducing the fluid stream, and a way to remove the treated fluid. Common adsorbent materials include activated carbon, zeolites, silica gel, and activated alumina. The choice of adsorbent depends on the specific substance to be removed and the properties of the fluid stream. Factors such as pore size, surface area, and surface chemistry of the adsorbent are crucial for efficient adsorption.

Adsorption processes can be operated in batch or continuous modes. In batch systems, the adsorbent is loaded into a vessel, the fluid is passed through until the adsorbent is saturated, and then the adsorbent is regenerated or replaced. Continuous systems, such as packed bed adsorbers, allow for uninterrupted operation by using multiple adsorbent beds that cycle between adsorption and regeneration. Regeneration is the process of desorbing the adsorbed substances from the adsorbent, allowing it to be reused. This can be achieved by altering temperature, pressure, or by using a stripping gas or liquid.
