Activator

An activator is an agent that increases the activity or effectiveness of a process, a system, or a component within a larger mechanism. The term is used across disciplines to denote something that initiates, enhances, or accelerates a reaction, response, or function. An activator may work by providing energy, altering the state of a substrate, facilitating binding interactions, or enabling regulatory pathways.

In biology and genetics, transcriptional activators are proteins that increase the transcription of specific genes. They bind to DNA regulatory elements such as promoters or enhancers and recruit or stabilize the transcription machinery. Activity can be modulated by cellular signals, protein-protein interactions, and chromatin structure.
