Abgezweigt

Abgezweigt is a German past participle and adjective derived from the verb abzweigen, meaning to branch off or diverge. It describes something that has split away from a main line, such as a road, river, or route, or a path of action that has diverted from an original plan. In technical or geographic writing, objects described as abgezweigt often form a side branch or offshoot.

Etymology and usage: The form comes from ab- (away) + zweigen (to branch). The participle abgezweigt is used attributively as “ein abgezweigter Nebenweg” or predicatively as “Der Weg ist abgezweigt.” In everyday speech it is less common than more ordinary terms like abgewichen or umgeleitet, but it appears in historical, cartographic, or formal prose.

Examples: A river may have abgezweigt into a new channel, creating a side arm; a transportation route may be abgezweigt to avoid a city center; a plan may be abgezweigt due to new constraints. In each case, the main course is redirected to a different path.
