Aberratiecorrectie is a process used in optics and microscopy to reduce or eliminate optical aberrations, which are imperfections in lens systems that distort images. These distortions can cause blurring, chromatic fringing, or other visual artifacts, hindering accurate observation or imaging. Common aberrations include spherical aberration, where light rays passing through different parts of a lens focus at different points, and chromatic aberration, where different wavelengths of light are refracted at different angles, leading to color fringing.

Various techniques are employed for aberration correction. In traditional optics, this involves carefully designing and combining multiple lens elements made of different glass types and shapes. For instance, achromatic doublets and apochromatic triplets are combinations of lenses used to correct for chromatic aberration. In more advanced applications, particularly in microscopy, adaptive optics are used. These systems employ deformable mirrors or spatial light modulators to dynamically adjust the wavefront of light, counteracting aberrations introduced by the optical system itself or by the specimen being viewed.

The goal of aberration correction is to achieve sharper, clearer images with higher resolution and fidelity. This is crucial in fields like astronomy, where telescopes aim to capture distant celestial objects with minimal distortion, and in biology and medicine, where microscopes are used to visualize cellular structures and processes with extreme detail. Without effective aberration correction, the information contained within an optical image would be significantly degraded, limiting scientific discovery and technological advancement.
