The most prominent ATP synthesis pathway is oxidative phosphorylation, which occurs in the mitochondria. In addition to aerobic pathways, anaerobic fermentation provides a means for ATP production in the absence of oxygen. While less efficient, processes like lactic acid fermentation allow continued energy supply under hypoxic conditions, primarily in muscle tissues during intense activity.
