AMLD4

AMLD4 refers to the fourth iteration of the European Union's Anti-Money Laundering Directive. Its full official title is Directive 2015/849/EU. This directive was adopted in 2015 and came into force in June 2017. The primary objective of AMLD4 is to combat money laundering and terrorist financing across the European Union by harmonizing anti-money laundering regulations among member states.

Key provisions of AMLD4 include expanding the scope of obliged entities to include a wider range of professionals, such as virtual currency exchange providers and certain types of gambling service providers. It also introduced enhanced customer due diligence requirements, including the need to identify and verify the beneficial owners of companies. Furthermore, AMLD4 emphasized the importance of national risk assessments to identify and understand the specific money laundering and terrorist financing risks faced by each member state. The directive also introduced provisions for public access to beneficial ownership registers, aiming to increase transparency. It laid the groundwork for subsequent AML directives, such as AMLD5 and AMLD6, which further refined and strengthened the EU's anti-financial crime framework.
