65001s

65001s are a class of British Rail diesel-electric locomotives. These locomotives were built by British Rail at their Crewe Works between 1964 and 1966. They were a development of the earlier Class 37 locomotives, intended for heavy freight and passenger duties. A total of 101 locomotives were built in this series.

The 65001s were powered by a Ruston-Paxman 12CSV 12-cylinder diesel engine, producing 1,750 horsepower. They featured a Bo-Bo wheel arrangement and were designed to be robust and reliable. Their main role was on the Western Region of British Rail, where they operated on a variety of routes, including those with steep gradients.

These locomotives were known for their distinctive sound and appearance. They were fitted with vacuum brakes for passenger trains and air brakes for freight. Over their service life, some 65001s were renumbered into the TOPS system as Class 37/4 locomotives, indicating modifications and upgrades. Many of these locomotives were withdrawn from service in the late 1990s and early 2000s, though a few have been preserved by heritage railways.
