It was discovered on 24 September 1973, by the Soviet astronomer Lyudmila Chernykh at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchnyj, on the Crimean peninsula. The Minor Planet Center records 63773 under the provisional designation 1973 SO2. It orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.9–3.3 AU once every 5 years and 5 months (1,997 days). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.06 and an inclination of 11° with respect to the ecliptic. The body's observation arc begins with its official discovery observation at Nauchnyj in September 1973.
