The synthesis of 3-ketodihydrosphingosine involves the enzyme serine palmitoyltransferase, which catalyzes the condensation of serine and palmitoyl-CoA. This is followed by a reduction step catalyzed by 3-ketodihydrosphingosine reductase to form dihydrosphingosine. Subsequently, dihydrosphingosine is oxidized by dihydroceramide desaturase to produce ceramide.
