It was discovered on October 14, 1999, by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project at the Lincoln Laboratory's Experimental Test Site near Socorro, New Mexico. The asteroid is approximately 2 kilometers in diameter and has a rotation period of about 5.7 hours. It is classified as a main-belt asteroid, with a semi-major axis of 2.67 astronomical units (AU) and an orbital period of 4.2 years. The asteroid's orbit has an eccentricity of 0.11 and an inclination of 12.7 degrees relative to the ecliptic. As of 2023, 188486 has not been named, and its provisional designation remains (188486) 1999 UH55.
