Útskilnaðarferlar refers to the biological processes by which organisms eliminate waste products from their bodies. These processes are essential for maintaining homeostasis, the stable internal environment necessary for survival. Different organisms have evolved diverse and complex mechanisms to achieve this.

In simple organisms like bacteria and protists, waste products are typically diffused directly out of the cell into the surrounding environment. More complex multicellular organisms, however, have specialized organ systems dedicated to excretion.

In animals, the primary excretory organs are the kidneys, which filter waste products from the blood and produce urine. The urinary system, including the bladder and urethra, then eliminates this urine from the body. Other excretory routes include the skin, which eliminates sweat containing salts and urea, and the lungs, which excrete carbon dioxide. The digestive system also plays a role by eliminating undigested food material as feces, although this is not strictly considered metabolic waste.

Plants also have mechanisms for waste removal, though they differ from animals. They may release waste products through their leaves (guttation) or store them in vacuoles or in dead tissues like bark. Some plants even excrete waste into the soil.
