Ääntevyys, often translated as phonotactics, refers to the set of rules governing the permissible sequencing of sounds within a language. It dictates which sound combinations are allowed at the beginning, middle, and end of words, and also within syllables. These rules are not arbitrary; they are deeply ingrained in a language's phonological system and contribute to its characteristic sound.

For instance, in English, while the sequence "str" is permissible at the beginning of a word (as in "street"), the sequence "tsr" is not. Similarly, many languages have restrictions on consonant clusters. Some languages, like Japanese, have very limited consonant clusters, often requiring a vowel to follow any consonant. Others, like Polish, allow for complex consonant clusters.

Ääntevyys influences not only the pronunciation of words but also how speakers perceive and learn a language. Foreign sounds or sound combinations that violate a language's phonotactic rules may be perceived as difficult to pronounce or even non-existent. Understanding a language's ääntevyys is crucial for accurate pronunciation, language acquisition, and linguistic analysis. It is a fundamental aspect of a language's sound structure.
