Ääninauhat

Ääninauhat, known in English as vocal folds or vocal cords, are a pair of delicate, muscular tissues located within the larynx, or voice box, in the throat. Their primary function is to produce sound through vibration. When air from the lungs passes through the glottis, the space between the vocal folds, it causes them to vibrate. The frequency and tension of these vibrations determine the pitch of the sound produced.

The muscles within the larynx can adjust the length, tension, and thickness of the vocal folds, allowing for a wide range of vocalizations, from low rumbling sounds to high-pitched notes. The quality of the voice, including its loudness and timbre, is also influenced by the way the vocal folds vibrate and interact with the resonating cavities of the throat, mouth, and nasal passages.

Damage to the vocal folds, whether from overuse, infection, or other medical conditions, can result in voice disorders such as hoarseness, loss of voice, or pain during speaking. Medical professionals, particularly laryngologists, specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the vocal folds. Maintaining vocal health involves practices like staying hydrated, avoiding excessive strain, and seeking prompt medical attention for any persistent voice changes.
