Ääninauhat, known in English as vocal folds or vocal cords, are a pair of delicate, muscular tissues located within the larynx, or voice box, in the throat. Their primary function is to produce sound through vibration. When air from the lungs passes through the glottis, the space between the vocal folds, it causes them to vibrate. The frequency and tension of these vibrations determine the pitch of the sound produced.
