Äänilevymuodot, or sound recording formats, refer to the physical media used to store and reproduce audio. These formats have evolved significantly over time, each offering different capabilities and fidelity.

Early sound recording formats included wax cylinders, which were fragile and had limited playback time. These were largely superseded by the gramophone record, commonly known as the vinyl record. Vinyl records, available in various speeds like 78 rpm, 45 rpm, and 33 1/3 rpm (LPs), store audio as a groove etched into a disc. The needle of a record player tracks this groove, converting the physical undulations into electrical signals that are then amplified.

Magnetic tape formats, such as reel-to-reel tapes and cassette tapes, became popular in the mid-20th century. These formats store audio as magnetized particles on a plastic tape. Cassette tapes, in particular, offered portability and ease of use, making music more accessible.

The digital revolution introduced optical disc formats like the Compact Disc (CD). CDs store audio as binary data, read by a laser. This digital format offered superior sound quality and durability compared to analog predecessors. Later, digital audio files, such as MP3 and WAV, emerged, allowing for storage on computers, portable media players, and streaming services, largely replacing physical media for many consumers. Each format has its own advantages and disadvantages regarding sound quality, storage capacity, durability, and cost.
