These movements are essential for vision, allowing us to gather visual information and perceive the world around us. There are several types of eye movements, each serving a distinct purpose.

Saccades are rapid, ballistic movements that quickly shift the fovea, the area of sharpest vision, from one point of interest to another. These occur involuntarily and are responsible for the discontinuous nature of our visual perception, as the brain processes information primarily during fixations between saccades.

Smooth pursuit eye movements allow the eyes to follow a moving object smoothly, maintaining a stable image on the fovea. This type of movement requires a moving target and is critical for tasks like watching a ball in flight or reading text that is scrolling.

Vergence eye movements are responsible for aligning both eyes on a target at different distances. Convergence occurs when eyes turn inward to focus on a near object, while divergence occurs when they turn outward to focus on a distant object. These movements are crucial for binocular vision and depth perception.

Finally, vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) stabilizes vision during head movements. It generates compensatory eye movements in the opposite direction of head rotation, ensuring that the visual scene remains stable on the retina. This reflex is vital for maintaining clear vision while walking, running, or performing any activity involving head motion.
