In Estonian legal terminology, õigussuhe refers to a legal relationship. It is a social relationship regulated by law, which establishes specific rights and obligations for the parties involved. These rights and obligations are legally enforceable, meaning that if one party fails to fulfill their obligations, the other party has legal recourse.

An õigussuhe is characterized by several key elements. Firstly, there must be at least two subjects, which can be natural persons, legal persons, or even the state. Secondly, there must be a legal basis, meaning the relationship is recognized and regulated by a specific norm of law. Thirdly, the relationship involves a content, which consists of the rights and duties of the subjects. These rights and duties are typically correlative; for example, one party's right corresponds to another party's duty. Finally, an õigussuhe has an object, which is the subject matter or behavior that the legal relationship pertains to.

Legal relationships can arise from various sources, including contracts, torts (delicts), inheritance, marriage, and administrative acts. For instance, a contract of sale creates a legal relationship where the seller has the obligation to transfer ownership of goods and the buyer has the right to receive them, and vice versa. Similarly, a tortious act creates a legal relationship where the perpetrator has the obligation to compensate the victim for damages suffered. The termination of an õigussuhe can occur through various means, such as the fulfillment of obligations, agreement between the parties, or by operation of law. Understanding the concept of õigussuhe is fundamental to comprehending the practical application of legal rules in Estonia.
