Ízlelbimbóinak is a Hungarian term that translates to "taste buds" in English. Each taste bud contains a cluster of specialized cells, including gustatory cells. These cells have microvilli, which are hair-like projections that extend into a taste pore. When food or drink comes into contact with saliva, dissolved molecules bind to receptors on these microvilli. This binding triggers a signal that is transmitted through nerves to the brain, where it is interpreted as a specific taste.

While primarily associated with taste, these structures also play a role in detecting temperature and texture, contributing to the overall sensory experience of eating. The regeneration of taste bud cells is a continuous process, with most cells having a lifespan of about 10 to 14 days.
