Étretats

Étretat is a commune in the Seine-Maritime department in the Haute-Normandie region of France. It is located on the coast of the English Channel, approximately 25 kilometers (16 miles) north of Le Havre. The town is renowned for its dramatic white chalk cliffs, which have inspired numerous artists and writers.

The most famous of these cliffs are the Falaise d'Aval and the Falaise d'Amont. The Falaise d'Aval features a natural arch, known as the Manneporte, and a needle-like rock formation called L'Aiguille. These distinctive geological features have made Étretat a popular tourist destination for centuries. The town's unique coastline was famously depicted in paintings by Claude Monet and was also mentioned in the works of Victor Hugo and Guy de Maupassant.

Historically, Étretat was a small fishing village. Its transformation into a prominent resort town began in the 19th century, fueled by the rise of seaside tourism and the romantic idealization of nature. The construction of the railway line in the late 19th century further facilitated access and contributed to its growth.

Today, Étretat attracts visitors who come to admire the cliffs, walk along the coastal paths, and explore the charming town. The beach, though pebbly, is also a draw. The town offers various amenities for tourists, including hotels, restaurants, and local craft shops. The Étretat Garden, a stunning horticultural display perched on the cliffs, provides panoramic views of the sea and the rock formations. The area remains a significant example of natural beauty on the Alabaster Coast.
