Ælfred
Alfred, also known as Alfred the Great, was King of Wessex from 871 to 899. He was the first Anglo-Saxon king to be called "the Great" and the only English monarch to be given that epithet. He defended his kingdom against the Viking attempts at conquest and converted the Danes to Christianity. He was a learned man who encouraged education and literacy, and he commissioned the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. Alfred's reign was marked by his efforts to promote learning and culture, as well as his military successes. He is considered one of England's greatest kings.
