Záróizom is the Hungarian term for sphincter muscle. Sphincter muscles are a group of muscles that form a ring around a body opening. Their primary function is to control the passage of substances, either by allowing them to pass through or by preventing them from doing so. They work by contracting and relaxing.

There are many sphincter muscles throughout the human body. Prominent examples include the lower esophageal sphincter, which prevents stomach contents from flowing back into the esophagus, and the anal sphincters, which control the elimination of feces. Other sphincters are found in the urinary tract, gallbladder, and even within blood vessels.

The action of a sphincter muscle is typically involuntary, meaning it operates without conscious control, although some, like the anal sphincters, can be consciously controlled to some extent. The proper functioning of sphincter muscles is crucial for maintaining bodily functions such as digestion, waste elimination, and preventing the backflow of fluids and gases. Dysfunction of a sphincter can lead to various medical conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or incontinence.
