Zerostuffing is a technique used in data transmission to prevent the occurrence of a specific sequence of bits that might be misinterpreted as a control signal. In many communication protocols, certain bit patterns are reserved for special functions, such as the start or end of a frame. If the actual data being transmitted happens to contain one of these reserved patterns, it could disrupt the communication flow.

To avoid this, zerostuffing works by monitoring the data stream. When a certain number of consecutive '1' bits are detected, a '0' bit is automatically inserted into the stream immediately after the sequence of '1's. For example, if the data contains five consecutive '1's, a zerostuffing mechanism would change it to six '1's followed by a '0'. This ensures that the reserved bit pattern, which might be, for instance, six consecutive '1's followed by a '0', never appears in the transmitted data.

At the receiving end, a corresponding de-stuffing process reverses this operation. When the receiver encounters a '0' bit that immediately follows a sequence of '1' bits, it knows that this '0' was artificially inserted and removes it. This restores the original data stream without the inserted zeros, allowing the data to be correctly interpreted. Zerostuffing is a form of bit stuffing and is crucial for maintaining data integrity in various networking and communication standards.
