Yläperäsuoli, also known as the ascending colon, is the section of the large intestine that extends upward from the cecum, the beginning of the large intestine. It is the first part of the colon and is located on the right side of the abdomen. It typically extends from the ileocecal valve, where the small intestine joins the large intestine, to the hepatic flexure, a bend in the colon located beneath the liver. The lining of the yläperäsuoli contains specialized cells that secrete mucus, which lubricates the passage of feces. The muscular walls of the yläperäsuoli contract and relax in a process called peristalsis, propelling the contents towards the transverse colon.
