Yksikköjuuritestejä, also known as unit root tests, are statistical tests used in econometrics and time series analysis to determine if a time series is stationary. A stationary time series has statistical properties, such as mean and variance, that do not change over time. Non-stationary time series, characterized by the presence of a unit root, tend to have trends or random walks that make them more difficult to model and forecast reliably.

The most common type of unit root test is the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test. This test examines the null hypothesis that a unit root is present in the time series. If the test results in a rejection of the null hypothesis, it suggests that the series is stationary. Other unit root tests include the Phillips-Perron (PP) test and the Kwiatkowski-Phillips-Schmidt-Shin (KPSS) test. The KPSS test, unlike the ADF and PP tests, uses the null hypothesis that the time series is stationary.

The presence of a unit root can lead to spurious regression, where a statistical relationship between two non-stationary variables might appear significant even if no true relationship exists. Therefore, identifying and addressing unit roots is a crucial step in time series analysis. If a series is found to be non-stationary, differencing the series (i.e., taking the difference between consecutive observations) is a common technique to make it stationary. This transformed series can then be used in further analysis.
