In these systems, a ruling elite typically held significant control over land and labor. Another significant social order is democracy, which emphasizes popular sovereignty, citizen participation, and the protection of individual rights. In a democracy, power is ideally vested in the people, who exercise it directly or through elected representatives.

Economic systems also heavily influence social order. Capitalism, for example, is characterized by private ownership of the means of production and market-based allocation of resources, which can lead to distinct social stratification. Socialism, on the other hand, advocates for social ownership or control of the means of production and distribution, aiming for greater economic equality. Other social orders might be defined by religious principles, such as theocracies, where religious leaders hold political authority. The study of social orders is crucial for understanding societal dynamics, power relations, and the pursuit of social justice and stability.
