The weak force, also known as the weak nuclear force or weak interaction, is one of the four fundamental forces of nature, alongside the strong nuclear force, electromagnetism, and gravity. It is responsible for certain types of radioactive decay, specifically beta decay. Unlike the strong force which binds atomic nuclei together, or electromagnetism which governs interactions between charged particles, the weak force has a very short range, acting only within the nucleus of an atom.

The weak force is mediated by the W and Z bosons, which are massive particles. This mass is what gives the weak force its limited range. It plays a crucial role in nuclear fusion within stars, such as the Sun. Without the weak force, stars would not be able to convert hydrogen into helium, a process that releases the energy we receive as light and heat. It is also responsible for the transformation of quarks from one flavor to another. For instance, a down quark can transform into an up quark through the weak interaction, which is a key step in beta decay. The study of the weak force is a cornerstone of the Standard Model of particle physics.
