Vitrifisering is a process of converting a substance into a glass-like solid. Unlike crystallization, which involves the formation of a highly ordered crystalline structure, vitrifikation results in a disordered, amorphous solid. This occurs when a liquid is cooled rapidly enough that its molecules do not have sufficient time to arrange themselves into a crystalline lattice. Instead, they become trapped in a rigid, non-crystalline state.

The phenomenon of vitrifikation is observed in various natural and artificial processes. For example, volcanic lava, when cooled quickly, can form obsidian, a natural glass. In industrial applications, vitrifikation is employed in the production of glass itself. It is also a crucial technique in cryopreservation. Cryopreservation involves preserving biological materials, such as cells, tissues, and embryos, at very low temperatures. Direct freezing can lead to the formation of ice crystals, which can damage delicate biological structures. Vitrifikation, however, allows for the preservation of these materials without the formation of damaging ice crystals. Specialized cryoprotective agents are often used to lower the freezing point and viscosity of the solution, facilitating the vitrified state. When the vitrified material is rewarmed, it returns to its liquid state without structural damage.
