Vetokäynnistys, often referred to as a pull-start or recoil starter, is a common mechanism used to initiate the operation of small internal combustion engines. This system is prevalent in devices such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, generators, and outboard motors. The fundamental principle involves a coiled spring that stores rotational energy.

When the starter cord is pulled, it engages a ratchet or pawl mechanism connected to the engine's crankshaft. This engagement allows the user's pulling force to be transferred to the crankshaft, causing it to rotate. As the cord is pulled, it also winds a return spring within the starter housing.

Once the engine begins to run, the crankshaft's rotation disengages the ratchet, allowing the starter mechanism to retract freely. The stored energy in the return spring then pulls the cord back into its housing, resetting the system for the next start. The design aims to provide a straightforward and reliable method for starting engines without requiring an external power source like a battery. Variations exist in the complexity of the spring system and the engagement method, but the core function remains the same.
