Välityshiukkanen is the Finnish term for a force carrier particle, also known as an elementary or fundamental particle that mediates the fundamental forces of nature. These particles are essential in the Standard Model of particle physics, describing the interactions between matter particles.

There are four fundamental forces, and each has its corresponding välityshiukkanen. The electromagnetic force, responsible for phenomena like electricity, magnetism, and light, is mediated by photons. The strong nuclear force, which binds quarks together to form protons and neutrons, and holds the nucleus of an atom together, is mediated by gluons. The weak nuclear force, involved in radioactive decay and certain nuclear reactions, is mediated by W and Z bosons. Finally, the gravitational force, the weakest but most far-reaching force, is hypothesized to be mediated by the graviton, although this particle has not yet been experimentally detected.

Välityshiukkaset are bosons, meaning they have integer spin, which distinguishes them from fermions (matter particles) that have half-integer spin. Their existence and properties are predicted by quantum field theory, and their discovery has been a cornerstone of modern physics. Experiments at particle accelerators like the Large Hadron Collider are crucial for detecting and studying these fundamental particles, providing insights into the workings of the universe at its most basic level.
