Tørremiddelaffugtere, also known as desiccant dehumidifiers, are a type of dehumidifier that utilizes a moisture-absorbing material, or desiccant, to remove water vapor from the air. This desiccant is typically a solid material like silica gel or lithium chloride, which has a strong affinity for water. The process involves a rotating wheel or a similar mechanism where the desiccant is exposed to moist ambient air. As the air passes over the desiccant, water molecules are adsorbed onto its surface. The dried air is then returned to the room.

To maintain the desiccant's effectiveness, it must be regenerated. This is achieved by heating a portion of the desiccant wheel in a separate chamber. The heated air, now carrying the evaporated moisture, is expelled from the unit, often through a separate exhaust duct. This continuous cycle of adsorption and regeneration allows the desiccant dehumidifier to consistently reduce humidity levels.

Tørremiddelaffugtere are particularly effective in colder environments where refrigerant-based dehumidifiers may struggle to operate efficiently due to freezing issues. They can achieve very low humidity levels and are often used in applications such as basements, garages, boats, and for drying industrial processes. While they may consume more energy than refrigerant dehumidifiers in warmer conditions, their ability to perform in low temperatures and achieve superior dryness makes them a valuable choice for specific needs. The expelled air during regeneration can also be utilized to provide a slight warming effect in the room.
