Tärykalvo, also known as the eardrum or tympanic membrane, is a thin, cone-shaped membrane that separates the external ear from the middle ear. It is composed of three layers: an outer epidermal layer, a middle fibrous layer, and an inner mucous membrane layer.

The primary function of the tärykalvo is to transmit sound vibrations from the external auditory canal to the ossicles (malleus, incus, and stapes) in the middle ear. When sound waves enter the ear canal, they strike the tärykalvo, causing it to vibrate. These vibrations are then amplified and conducted through the middle ear bones to the cochlea in the inner ear, where they are converted into nerve signals that are sent to the brain for interpretation as sound.

The tärykalvo is a delicate structure and can be damaged by loud noises, infections, or physical trauma. Rupture of the tärykalvo can lead to hearing loss, tinnitus, and dizziness. Treatment for a ruptured tärykalvo depends on the cause and severity of the injury, and may include antibiotics, ear drops, or surgical repair.
