Tápanyagkörforgalomban refers to the nutrient cycle in Hungarian. It describes the continuous movement and transformation of essential chemical elements within an ecosystem. These elements, such as carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and water, are vital for the survival and growth of all living organisms. The nutrient cycle involves both biological and geological processes. Organisms absorb nutrients from their environment, incorporate them into their tissues, and then release them back through processes like decomposition, respiration, and excretion. Geological processes, like weathering of rocks and volcanic activity, also contribute to the availability of nutrients.

In a terrestrial ecosystem, for example, plants absorb nutrients from the soil. When plants die or are eaten by animals, these nutrients are transferred. Decomposers, like bacteria and fungi, break down dead organic matter, returning nutrients to the soil, where they can be absorbed by plants again. Similarly, in aquatic ecosystems, nutrients cycle between the water, sediment, and aquatic life.

The efficiency of nutrient cycling is crucial for ecosystem health and productivity. Disruptions to these cycles, caused by human activities like pollution or deforestation, can lead to imbalances, impacting biodiversity and ecosystem services.
