Tutkimusvilppi, known in English as research misconduct or scientific fraud, refers to the fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism in proposing, performing, or reviewing research, or in reporting research results. Fabrication involves making up data or results and recording or reporting them as if they were genuine. Falsification, on the other hand, involves manipulating research materials, equipment, or processes, or changing or omitting data or results such that the research is not accurately represented in the research record. Plagiarism is the appropriation of another person's ideas, processes, results, or words without giving due credit.

Research misconduct can occur at any stage of the research lifecycle, from the initial proposal and data collection to analysis and publication. It can be committed by individual researchers, research groups, or even institutions. The consequences of research misconduct can be severe, including retraction of publications, loss of funding, damage to reputation, and disciplinary actions. Institutions have established policies and procedures for investigating allegations of misconduct, and bodies like the Office of Research Integrity in the United States oversee such investigations. Maintaining research integrity is crucial for public trust in science and for the advancement of knowledge.
