Trophoblastiske refers to tissues or cells derived from the trophoblast. The trophoblast is the outer layer of cells that forms the placental tissue during pregnancy. It plays a crucial role in implantation, the process by which the early embryo attaches to the uterine wall.

The trophoblast differentiates into two main layers: the cytotrophoblast and the syncytiotrophoblast. The cytotrophoblast is an inner layer of distinct cells, while the syncytiotrophoblast is an outer, multinucleated layer that invades the uterine lining. This syncytiotrophoblast is responsible for producing hormones like human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which maintains the corpus luteum and supports the early pregnancy.

Trophoblastic tissue is essential for nutrient and gas exchange between the mother and the developing fetus. It forms the villi of the placenta, which increase the surface area for this exchange. Abnormalities in trophoblastic development can lead to pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia or gestational trophoblastic disease. Gestational trophoblastic disease encompasses a spectrum of tumors that arise from the trophoblastic cells, including hydatidiform mole and choriocarcinoma. These conditions require medical attention and monitoring.
