Platelets are essential for blood clotting, and their role is to stop bleeding by forming a plug at the site of an injury. In trombocytopenia, the body does not produce enough platelets or the platelets are destroyed too quickly. This condition can lead to excessive bleeding, which may occur spontaneously or following minor injuries.

Trombocytopenia can be classified into two main types: immune-mediated and non-immune-mediated. Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia occurs when the immune system attacks and destroys platelets. Non-immune-mediated thrombocytopenia can result from various causes, including bone marrow disorders, infections, and certain medications.

The diagnosis of thrombocytopenia typically involves a complete blood count (CBC) to measure the platelet count. If the platelet count is below 150,000 per microliter of blood, it is considered low. Further tests may be required to determine the underlying cause.

Treatment for thrombocytopenia depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the condition. In mild cases, supportive care such as avoiding activities that may cause bleeding and using over-the-counter pain relievers may be sufficient. In more severe cases, medications such as platelet transfusions, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), or immunosuppressive drugs may be necessary. In some cases, the underlying cause may be treated to improve platelet production.
