Tredjeperspektiv, meaning "third person" in Swedish, refers to a narrative point of view where the narrator is not a character within the story. This perspective typically uses pronouns like "he," "she," "it," and "they." Unlike first-person narration which offers an intimate, subjective experience, or second-person narration which directly addresses the reader, the third-person narrator exists outside the events being described.

There are two main types of third-person narration: omniscient and limited. An omniscient narrator knows everything about all characters and events, including their thoughts and feelings. A limited third-person narrator, however, focuses on the thoughts and feelings of only one or a few characters, providing a more constrained view. This allows for a balance between objective reporting and subjective insight.

The choice of third-person perspective significantly shapes a reader's understanding of the story. It can create a sense of distance, allowing for a broader overview of the plot and multiple character arcs, or it can draw the reader closer to a specific character's internal world.
