A transmultiplexer is a digital signal processing device that converts a single, high-rate digital signal into multiple, lower-rate digital signals, or vice-versa. This process is often referred to as frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) in a digital context. Essentially, it takes a wide frequency band and divides it into several narrower, independent frequency bands, each carrying a separate signal.

The primary function of a transmultiplexer is to enable efficient use of communication channels. By combining multiple signals into a single, higher-bandwidth signal for transmission, it reduces the need for individual physical lines or costly dedicated bandwidth. On the receiving end, a corresponding demultiplexer (or "transmultiplexer" in the reverse direction) separates the combined signal back into its constituent lower-rate signals.

Transmultiplexers are widely used in telecommunications systems, particularly in telephone networks. For instance, they can aggregate multiple voice channels into a single high-speed data stream for transmission over trunk lines.
