Topmeristeem refers to the primary meristematic tissue located at the apex of plant shoots and roots. These actively dividing cells are responsible for the plant's primary growth, leading to an increase in length. The shoot apical meristem is found at the tip of the stem and gives rise to leaves, branches, and flowers, while the root apical meristem is located at the tip of the root and is responsible for root elongation and the formation of lateral roots.

The cells within the topmeristeem are undifferentiated and possess thin cell walls and dense cytoplasm. They undergo rapid mitosis, producing new cells that differentiate into various plant tissues, such as the protoderm, ground meristem, and procambium. This continuous process of cell division and differentiation allows plants to grow taller and longer, enabling them to access sunlight and nutrients. The organized structure and precise regulation of the topmeristeem are crucial for proper plant development and survival. Damage or disruption to these meristems can severely impair a plant's growth.
