Toiduvõrgustikul is an Estonian term that translates to "food web" or "food network" in English. It refers to the complex interdependencies of living organisms within an ecosystem, illustrating the flow of energy and nutrients through different trophic levels. In simpler terms, it describes who eats whom in a particular environment.

A food web is comprised of multiple interconnected food chains. A food chain shows a linear sequence of organisms where each organism is eaten by the next organism in the chain. For example, a simple food chain might be grass -> rabbit -> fox. However, in reality, most organisms have more than one predator and prey, leading to the formation of a more intricate food web.

The base of most food webs consists of producers, typically plants and algae, which create their own food through photosynthesis. These producers are then consumed by primary consumers (herbivores), which are in turn eaten by secondary consumers (carnivores or omnivores). Tertiary and quaternary consumers occupy higher trophic levels, preying on organisms from lower levels. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, play a crucial role by breaking down dead organic matter, returning essential nutrients to the ecosystem for producers to utilize. The health and stability of an ecosystem are directly reflected in the complexity and robustness of its food web. Disruptions at any level, such as the loss of a species, can have cascading effects throughout the entire network.
