Toiduvõrgustik is an Estonian term that translates to "food web" in English. It describes the complex network of feeding relationships within an ecosystem, illustrating how energy flows from one organism to another. Unlike a simple food chain, which shows a single linear path of energy transfer, a food web acknowledges that most organisms consume more than one type of food and are, in turn, eaten by multiple predators.

The foundational components of any food web are producers, typically plants or algae, which create their own food through photosynthesis. These producers are then consumed by primary consumers, also known as herbivores. Secondary consumers, which can be carnivores or omnivores, feed on primary consumers. Tertiary and quaternary consumers occupy higher trophic levels, preying on organisms from lower levels. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, play a crucial role by breaking down dead organic matter from all trophic levels, returning essential nutrients to the ecosystem for producers to use.

The interconnectedness within a food web means that changes to one population can have ripple effects throughout the entire system. For instance, a decline in the population of a primary consumer might lead to an increase in producers and a decrease in the populations of its predators. Understanding these relationships is vital for ecological studies and conservation efforts.
