Titanium compounds encompass a wide range of chemical substances containing titanium. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is perhaps the most well-known and widely used, found in pigments for paints and plastics, sunscreens due to its UV-blocking properties, and as a photocatalyst. Titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) is a volatile liquid used in the production of titanium metal and as a smoke-producing agent. It reacts vigorously with water. Other important titanium compounds include titanium nitride (TiN), a hard ceramic used for coatings on tools and in microelectronics, and titanium carbide (TiC), another refractory material with applications in cutting tools and wear-resistant parts. Organotitanium compounds, containing titanium-carbon bonds, are employed as catalysts in polymerization reactions, particularly in the production of polyethylene and polypropylene. The diverse properties of titanium compounds, from their inertness and color to their hardness and catalytic activity, make them valuable in numerous industrial and technological applications.
