tiotalsperiod
Tiotalsperiod, also known as the Tiotals Period, is a geological period that occurred approximately 2.1 billion years ago during the Paleoproterozoic era. It is named after the Tiotals Formation in Sweden, which is a stratigraphic unit that provides a type section for this period. The Tiotalsperiod is characterized by a significant increase in atmospheric oxygen levels, a process known as the Great Oxygenation Event (GOE). This event led to the formation of the first widespread banded iron formations (BIFs), which are sedimentary rocks that contain alternating layers of iron-rich and silica-rich minerals. The Tiotalsperiod is also notable for the emergence of the first eukaryotic organisms, which are cells that have a true nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. These organisms played a crucial role in the oxygenation of the atmosphere and the evolution of complex life forms. The Tiotalsperiod ended with the onset of the Huronian glaciation, a period of intense glaciation that lasted for about 100 million years.
