The thalamus is a midline symmetrical structure within the vertebrate brain, situated between the cerebral cortex and the midbrain. It is a large, paired structure, with each hemisphere containing a thalamus. The thalamus is composed of several nuclei, each with specific connections and functions.

One of the primary roles of the thalamus is as a relay station for sensory information. Almost all sensory input, including visual, auditory, somatosensory, and gustatory information, passes through the thalamus before reaching the cerebral cortex for further processing. It filters and modulates this sensory information, deciding what is important enough to be sent to higher brain centers.

Beyond sensory relay, the thalamus is also involved in regulating consciousness, sleep, and alertness. It plays a crucial role in wakefulness and transitions between sleep and wakefulness. Furthermore, the thalamus participates in motor control, memory, and emotion, working in conjunction with other brain regions like the basal ganglia and the hippocampus. Its complex network of connections allows it to integrate information from various brain areas, contributing to a wide range of cognitive and behavioral functions.
