Tehtäväjärjestys, known in English as order of operations, is a rule set used in mathematics to determine the sequence in which mathematical operations should be performed to ensure a consistent and unambiguous result. Without a defined order, expressions could be interpreted in multiple ways, leading to different answers.

The most common mnemonic used to remember the order of operations is PEMDAS or BODMAS. PEMDAS stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right). BODMAS stands for Brackets, Orders (or Of), Division and Multiplication (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right). Both systems prescribe the same order of operations.

First, operations within parentheses or brackets are performed. Next, exponents or orders are calculated. Then, multiplication and division are carried out, working from left to right across the expression. Finally, addition and subtraction are performed, also from left to right.

For example, in the expression 3 + 4 * 2, according to the order of operations, multiplication is performed before addition. Thus, 4 * 2 = 8, and then 3 + 8 = 11. If the order were reversed, 3 + 4 = 7, and then 7 * 2 = 14, yielding a different result.

Understanding and applying the order of operations is fundamental for accuracy in arithmetic and algebra, forming a cornerstone of mathematical literacy.
